And usually the most common question that I have from clients – What to wear to family shooting?
And it can be just as challenging as finding the best photographer.
First you think that it doesn’t matter what to wear – you need only you and your emotions. I say: “Hmmm, yeah, but……”. It does matter. It is very important what cloth you have on you.
These tips will help you to find the right way with cloth for all family
- Matching the colours
Few years ago all photographers ask clients to put on white t-shirt and match the colours. Of course matching the colours is important, but those days are gone now. I suggest instead, pick a couple of colours and choose clothes that will fit in this colour scheme.
- Home style
Look at your home style.
Think a little bit how these pictures will fit on your walls?
Make sure that they will fit. But don’t afraid the bright colours! Colourful pallet works also good!
3. Accessories
not only add to your outfit but they can be fun to use in photos. Have the man wear a tie for the woman to hold. Necklaces for the kids to play with or hats to hide behind.
- Patterns
It could be nice to mix patterns that has all the colours in it. However, not everyone in the photo should wear patterns as it may distract the final image. And, yes, stripes and ellipse, square and flower patterns sometimes together look strange.
- Family collections
When I go shopping for clothes for my kids, I try to head to stores that usually have colour coordinating collections or family look for all family. I can then purchase clothes for all the children from one store. And I know these clothes will work together best of all.
- Extra plan
When you already book your session, prepare all clothes right away. You may choose certain clothes will fit your kids or that one shirt is clean. If you wait until the day of or day before you may run into an issue of clothes not fitting, being dirty or need to be cleaned.
- No characters and prints
Yes, your baby girl may love her princess dress or you boy could be in love with Spiderman T-shirt, but you may want to skip it for the family photo session. Just like patterns, characters and huge watermarks/prints on shirts can be pretty distracting.
- Maybe black or white?
If you are wearing an all-white shirt then it is very easy to blow out parts of your shirt causing it to lose its detail. Same can be said with all black, it’s easy to have clipping on black clothing and the detail is lost. I like a cotton fitted shirt. If you are taking photos in front of a backdrop, consider what you are wearing. It works, for exemple, with newborns, when you want only hands holding a baby, when you are all wearing black in front of a black backdrop.
However, in photographs I like to add textures like scarves or belts to add a little more to the image. Don’t shy away from different textures.
- Classic and timeless.
These photos will be hanging on your walls and treasured for years to come. Choose simple, classic clothes you will help give your images a timeless feel.
Don’t forget to put on your pretty smile. Because it is the most important cloth you should have on your shooting. And if you don’t have time to buy a white t-shirt or forget to take shoes you could be upset and looks sad on pictures. Don’t forget your laugh and remember that family looks help us, but the most important is your emotions!
